The Intersection of Creativity and Business
Welcome to the space where my thoughts, research, and experiences come together in written form. As a creative entrepreneur and advocate, I’m passionate about exploring the intersection of creativity, business, and the unique challenges faced by self-employed artists. I’m currently working on several projects, including a book and a series of opinion pieces.
Opinion Pieces
Based on my research and personal experiences, I am working on a series of opinion pieces that
delve into the three key issues affecting the creative industry:
1
Funding and Financial Sustainability
A recurring challenge for many creatives is the structure of arts funding, which often excludes essential business costs such as rent.
This gap forces artists to take on part-time jobs simply to survive, further distracting them from their creative pursuits and reducing their community impact.
I am explore how funding policies can be restructured to better support creatives and help them build financially sustainable businesses.
2
Co-Located Artist Studios
The creative community thrives on collaboration, mentorship, and shared spaces, which are often essential for artists to fully realise their practice.
However, co-located artist studios—where artists can network, create, and receive mentorship—are rare in Australia.
I am writing about the critical role these creative hubs play in fostering a thriving arts community and advocate for more accessible and affordable studio spaces.
3
Business Education and Support
Business education for creatives is often delivered in ways that contradict their needs, values, and motivations. Focused more on nailing and scaling, invest-ability. than local community context and engagement.
These traditional business approaches also fail to consider the unique workflows and cultural contexts of creatives, particularly for those from marginalised groups.
My writing advocates for more tailored business education and support systems that align with the specific needs of self-employed creative professionals, with a focus on inclusive practices and long-term sustainability
Art of Biz: Book in Progress
I’m currently writing a business book that addresses the mindset, motivation and behaviours unique to self-employed creatives - think Barefoot Investor but on business for self employed creatives.
This work delves into the realities of navigating a world that often feels at odds with the creative process. From balancing the demands of business with the need for creative freedom, to understanding how to structure your business to align with your specific needs and goals, to learning how to promote and market your art, in a way you actually enjoy. My goal is to offer practical, relatable business advice and strategies.
This book draws heavily from my personal experiences as a neurodivergent creative and from the insights I’ve gained through years of consulting, teaching, and mentoring others in the industry.
